Light up your workflow!

The Problem

Creative professionals, particularly video editors, currently face challenges in efficiently managing software bugs due to cluttered interfaces and poorly formatted forums.

Summary

During the course of my UX Certificate, I addressed this gap by designing a streamlined, user-friendly platform based on research. Firefly enables precise bug tracking and seamless reporting, enhancing workflow efficiency from start to finish.

Thinks

  • Troubleshooting bugs takes time.

  • Wants to complete their work efficiently.

Does

  • Struggles with finding concrete answers in busy forums.

  • Does not act on reporting if it’s too complicated.

Says

  • “I like being in my flow while editing.”

  • “Software bug reports are confusing, lots of information and forums that lead nowhere.”

  • Frustrated when working flow is interrupted

  • Annoyed at not receiving updates, and not finding what they need.

Pain points

No way to track bugs reported.

Does not act on reporting if process is too complex.

Does not receive updates on resolved issues.

User Research

In order to get perspective on what video editors and creatives want from this product, I conducted 10 virtual interviews. Participants were asked the following questions:

  •  How would you describe your overall experience with current bug reporting tools (ex. Adobe)?

  • Are there any additional features or improvements you would like to see in the bug reporting tool?

  • How frequently do you use the bug reporting tool for video editors in your workflow?

  • Do you believe that a designated bug reporting tool like Firefly could increase your productivity editing?

  • How often do you experience a bug, but not report it due to the steps required?

Insights

Almost all users said that a designated bug reporting tool would make them more productive.

Most users mentioned they experience a bug at least once per week.

Most users described they were frustrated with the current tools’ bug reporting process.

Competitive Analysis

I conducted a competitive analysis to explore the features of bug reporting tools for video editors. This showed pitfalls, areas for growth and competitive advantages.

Main Findings:

  • Only one competitor tool (Frame.io) is accessible

  • Only one competitor tool allows users to track their bugs through alerts

  • None of the competitors had an obvious path to report a bug

  • 1 out of 5 competitors' websites were not mobile responsive

With these findings, I saw a big opportunity in creating a website that focuses on accessibility, and ease of navigation.

Ideation-Design-Test

Since competitors websites presented illegible forums, and hard to find 'report' buttons, I wanted to focus on the following:

  • Ensure clutter-free, legible design across all screens

  • Prioritize fast access to the 'report' function for users

  • Create an intuitive, efficient bug reporting process with tracking functionality

Lo-Fi Design and Prototype

Testing Firefly through creative professionals

Integrated the following solutions based on usability study:

  1. Implemented unique tracking numbers for users' convenience, sent via email post-reporting.

  2. Streamlined bug reporting process, reducing it by one page for faster efficiency.

  3. Introduced personalized account page enabling users to customize bug notification preferences.

  4. Incorporate a CTA button to help users report a bug right away.

Achievements & Discoveries

  • Balancing practicality and aesthetics proved challenging during the design phase, highlighting the importance of finding a middle ground for user engagement. Iterating on high-fidelity screens helped bridge the gap between functionality and visual appeal.

  • Limited user diversity in testing emphasized the need for a broader participant pool. Despite challenges in recruitment, insights from varied perspectives were valuable for identifying usability issues.

  • Moving forward, I aim to enhance recruitment strategies to include a more diverse range of participants from the outset, ensuring inclusive design catering to a wider user base.
